Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants. Apparently not so common.
So what is a digital native? Entonces, ¿qué es un nativo digital?
It refers to a person born after 1980. Whereas digital natives were born into a world already wired for the internet, digital immigrants come from a more analogue world and had to migrate into a world where the yellow pages was no longer a printed telephone book.
The problem with this definition often discussed is that a date does not automatically make a person an IT wizard. Their environment, home and school life which we bundle into a socioeconomic metric that combines education, income and occupation provide a better indicator to determine how digitally native, or digitally literate and fluent a person is.
I also wanted to debunk the notion that one’s birthdate dictated their digital immigrant or native status.
I am a digital immigrant.
I had planned to incorporate the notion of a digital native into our fun quest for interested students, teachers and parents. Loosely based on the character Carmen Sandiego and Tintin who embark on their own adventures, We want to create a quest of geographic, historical, flora, fauna and cultural clues and quizzes that aligns with the countries we are visiting.
In order to have my facts right, I have to research the clues and answers in the same way any movie producer or story writer would. This makes us better informed before our journey starts and if a side track opens up for us to explore, we are more likely to take it if there is a story associated with the location. We will learn such stories while on our travels, but some pre-trip research is also valuable. Rick Riordon’s fictional stories of Percy Jackson and the Kane siblings provides factual nuggets throughout the book delivering Greek and Egyptian history to the reader without it being a lesson.
This is a long post. Here is how to have it read out to you.
Being an older Caucasian male, I was self-conscious about using the title “native” in a blog where people who don’t know me from cultures I am not familiar with might misinterpret the actual definition of “digital native”. I road-tested the term digital native which has been around in my vocabulary for almost 2 decades, however amongst other IT folk including family, I discovered they thought of it as a foreign term. I was surprised and became even more sensitive to whether people would understand the term.
If those folks who have been involved in the IT industry didn’t understand the definitions of Digital Immigrants and Natives, I was really concerned that in using that term in my South America travels and blog, it might be misunderstood.
Initially, I wanted the quest to be about tracking down a digital native. I have changed that to be a quest for digital natives to participate in. The clues and thoughts of what might be interesting are aimed at 4 – 14-year-olds. Why that age range? My impressionable nieces, nephews and grand-nieces are of that age and although the age range is great, I still want to give it a go. I was heartened after one of my four year old followers queried if we were going to be visiting “Princess Land”. The answer is of course yes. Will that be in Torres del Paine or in Cusco? Not sure, but when we find it, we will know.
Helen and I didn’t just find a digital native we created one. Our son was born in the year that the term digital native was coined. What I’m quite pleased about is that we didn’t leave our digital native in a root bound pot constricting their growth. We gave him the opportunity to flourish without boundaries of a pot and occasionally added some fertiliser and also gave the ingredients of love and encouragement which we might equate to sunlight water and air. As with plants digital natives need a combination of these elements to thrive.
Our son is a digital native
To me, it describes an aspiration for young people to not just be born a digital native, but through opportunity and use of technology, ensure literacy and fluency develop to a level of unconscious competence so they focus on the creation and problem solving which we can also describe as creativity and critical thinking.
Digital literacy is one indicator of the capability to use technology tools, but digital fluency is the ability to seamlessly switch between various tools to find, create or share things that result in a useable product wanted by someone.
When I found out that a term common to me wasn’t so common, I wanted to dedicate this single post to the topic which is also translated into Spanish as well to highlight and explain the difference between a digital native and a digital immigrant.
The quest has now changed from “The search for the digital native” to “The search of the digital native” – It will be up to our two protagonists (Mencar and Nitnit) to find digital natives to participate in the quest… Although it sounds contradictory in the third decade of the 21st century we find that they’re not as common as you think.
This quest, created by a couple of digital immigrants for a number of digital natives, will give us personal satisfaction and increase our own digital fluency and if it adds value to readers or followers, then that is a bonus. I hope you and your little ones can join us on this parallel journey on our blog. Everything in the quest is junior digital-native friendly with my four-year-old grand-niece acting as my standards filter. Digital immigrants are more than welcome. There will be some behind-the-scenes “how to” on how I put together some of the materials.
Digital Literacy, Digital Dexterity and Digital Fluency are reflected in the ability of people to be adaptable, flexible, creative, and more in researching, finding, curating, creating and sharing the fruits of their digital endeavours. I will be writing more about this as it applies to the young charges we are attempting to educate… and maybe some older ones as well.
Analogue Communicators Despair Not
I was thinking of people who now realise that they are digital immigrants, and feel as if life is either passing them by or dealing them a cruel blow. Fear not. We still have our richest interactions in an analogue setting as described below. There is value though in splicing digital activities in between your analogue events. This amplifies the effect of your face-to-face interactions using some of the items below.
- Reading paperback books
- Brainstorming using a whiteboard
- Notetaking on a paper-based notebook
- Meeting in person
All are better than their digital equivalent, but the key is the level and frequency of engagement coupled with the value, respect and purpose the participants feel along with the value assigned to the task they are involved with.
About the Quest
Mencar and Nitnit (not their real names) met by accident in a Japanese Restaurant. For more than twenty years they have travelled to and lived in many exotic places around the world. Over the years, they have received their instructions from a mysterious person called Pupcake. Pupcake’s identity is a mystery, but she uses special discs to communicate with Mencar and Nitnit so she can protect her identity.
When the hotel in Santiago de Chile advised there was an envelope awaiting their arrival, both Mencar and Nitnit knew that a new adventure awaited them. What mission had Pupcake planned for them?
Facts and clues will be shared via video messages. After the fact or clue, you will be able to go to the question page and attempt to answer the clue. Remember to use your special code name to sign in. No real names are allowed as we are on a secret mission.
Instructions for setting your (charges) secret name for the quest will be in the newsletter. Truth be known, we haven’t set it up yet… but it is coming and in the meantime, we are gathering our tools to help us support this quest.

Nativos Digitales e Inmigrantes Digitales. Aparentemente no tan común.
Entonces, ¿qué es un nativo digital?
Se refiere a una persona nacida después de 1980. Mientras que los nativos digitales nacieron en un mundo ya conectado para Internet, los inmigrantes digitales provienen de un mundo más analógico y tuvieron que migrar a un mundo donde las páginas amarillas ya no eran una guía telefónica impresa.
El problema con esta definición que a menudo se discute es que una fecha no convierte automáticamente a una persona en un asistente de TI. También quería desacreditar la noción de que la fecha de nacimiento dictaba su estatus de inmigrante digital o nativo.
Soy un inmigrante digital.
Había planeado incorporar la noción de un nativo digital en nuestra divertida búsqueda de estudiantes, maestros y padres interesados. Basado libremente en el personaje Carmen Sandiego y Tintín que se embarcan en sus propias aventuras, queremos crear una búsqueda de pistas y cuestionarios geográficos, históricos, de flora, fauna y culturales que se alinee con los países que estamos visitando.
Para tener mis hechos correctos, tengo que investigar las pistas y respuestas de la misma manera que lo haría cualquier productor de cine o escritor de historias. Esto nos hace estar mejor informados antes de que comience nuestro viaje y si se abre una pista lateral para que la exploremos, es más probable que la tomemos si hay una historia asociada con la ubicación. Aprenderemos tales historias mientras viajamos, pero algunas investigaciones previas al viaje también son valiosas. Las historias ficticias de Rick Riordon de Percy Jackson y los hermanos Kane proporcionan pepitas fácticas a lo largo del libro que entregan la historia griega y egipcia al lector sin que sea una lección.
Siendo un hombre caucásico mayor, estaba cohibido por usar el título “nativo” en un blog donde las personas que no me conocen de culturas con las que no estoy familiarizado podrían malinterpretar la definición real de “nativo digital”. Probé el término nativo digital que ha existido en mi vocabulario durante casi 2 décadas, sin embargo, entre otras personas de TI, incluida la familia, descubrí que pensaban en él como un término extranjero. Me sorprendió y me volví aún más sensible a si la gente entendería el término.
Si esas personas que han estado involucradas en la industria de TI no entendían las definiciones de Inmigrantes y Nativos Digitales, me preocupaba mucho que al usar ese término en mis viajes y blog de América del Sur, pudiera malinterpretarse.
Inicialmente, quería que la búsqueda fuera sobre el seguimiento de un nativo digital. He cambiado eso para que sea una búsqueda en la que participen los nativos digitales. Las pistas y pensamientos de lo que podría ser interesante están dirigidos a niños de 4 a 14 años. ¿Por qué ese rango de edad? Mis sobrinas, sobrinos y sobrinas nietas impresionables tienen esa edad y, aunque el rango de edad es excelente, todavía quiero intentarlo.
Helen y yo no solo encontramos un nativo digital, creamos uno. Nuestro hijo nació en el año en que se acuñó el término nativo digital. Lo que me complace bastante es que no dejamos a nuestro nativo digital en una maceta ligada a la raíz que restringe su crecimiento. Le dimos la oportunidad de florecer sin los límites de una olla y ocasionalmente agregamos un poco de fertilizante y también le dimos los ingredientes de amor y aliento que podríamos equiparar a la luz del sol, el agua y el aire. Al igual que con las plantas, los nativos digitales necesitan una combinación de estos elementos para prosperar.
Nuestro hijo es nativo digital
Para mí, describe una aspiración para que los jóvenes no solo nazcan como nativos digitales, sino que a través de la oportunidad y el uso de la tecnología, garanticen que la alfabetización y la fluidez se desarrollen a un nivel de competencia inconsciente para que se centren en la creación y resolución de problemas que también podemos describir como creatividad y pensamiento crítico.
La alfabetización digital es un indicador de la capacidad de usar herramientas tecnológicas, pero la fluidez digital es la capacidad de cambiar sin problemas entre varias herramientas para encontrar, crear o compartir cosas que resulten en un producto utilizable deseado por alguien.
Cuando descubrí que un término común para mí no era tan común, quise dedicar este único post al tema que también está traducido al español para resaltar y explicar la diferencia entre un nativo digital y un inmigrante digital.
La búsqueda ahora ha cambiado de ” La búsqueda del nativo digital” a “La búsqueda del nativo digital” – Dependerá de nuestros dos protagonistas (Mencar y Nitnit) encontrar nativos digitales para participar en la búsqueda … Aunque suene contradictorio en la tercera década del siglo 21 encontramos que no son tan comunes como crees.
Esta búsqueda, creada por un par de inmigrantes digitales para una serie de nativos digitales, nos dará satisfacción personal y aumentará nuestra propia fluidez digital y si agrega valor a los lectores o seguidores, entonces eso es una ventaja. Espero que tú y tus pequeños podáis acompañarnos en este viaje paralelo en nuestro blog. Todo en la búsqueda es amigable con mi sobrina nieta de cuatro años que actúa como mi filtro de estándares. Los inmigrantes digitales son más que bienvenidos. Habrá algunos “cómo” detrás de escena sobre cómo armar algunos de los materiales.
La alfabetización digital, la destreza digital y la fluidez digital se reflejan en la capacidad de las personas para ser adaptables, flexibles, creativas y más en la investigación, búsqueda, curaduría, creación y compartir los frutos de sus esfuerzos digitales. Escribiré más sobre esto, ya que se aplica a los cargos jóvenes que estamos tratando de educar … y tal vez algunos mayores también.
Los comunicadores analógicos no se desesperan
Estaba pensando en personas que ahora se dan cuenta de que son inmigrantes digitales, y sienten como si la vida los estuviera pasando de largo o asestándoles un golpe cruel. No temas. Todavía tenemos nuestras interacciones más ricas en un entorno analógico como se describe a continuación. Sin embargo, hay valor en empalmar actividades digitales entre sus eventos analógicos. Esto amplifica el efecto de sus interacciones cara a cara utilizando algunos de los elementos a continuación.
- Lectura de libros de bolsillo
- Lluvia de ideas con una pizarra
- Toma de notas en un cuaderno basado en papel
- Reunión en persona
Todos son mejores que su equivalente digital, pero la clave es el nivel y la frecuencia de compromiso junto con el valor, el respeto y el propósito que sienten los participantes, junto con el valor asignado a la tarea en la que están involucrados.
Acerca de la búsqueda
Mencar y Nitnit (no son sus nombres reales) se conocieron por accidente en un restaurante japonés. Durante más de veinte años han viajado y vivido en muchos lugares exóticos de todo el mundo. A lo largo de los años, han recibido sus órdenes de una persona misteriosa llamada Pupcake. La identidad de Pupcake es un misterio, pero usa discos especiales para comunicarse con Mencar y Nitnit para que pueda proteger su identidad.
Cuando el hotel en Santiago de Chile avisó que había un sobre esperando su llegada, tanto Mencar como Nitnit sabían que les esperaba una nueva aventura. ¿Qué misión había planeado Pupcake para ellos?

Los hechos y las pistas se compartirán a través de mensajes de video. Después del hecho o pista, podrá ir a la página de preguntas e intentar responder a la pista. Recuerde usar su nombre en clave especial para iniciar sesión. No se permiten nombres reales ya que estamos en una misión secreta.
Las instrucciones para establecer su nombre secreto (cargos) para la misión estarán en el boletín. A decir verdad, aún no lo hemos configurado… pero está llegando y, mientras tanto, estamos reuniendo nuestras herramientas para ayudarnos a apoyar esta búsqueda.
